dj’s free to succeed tour came to chicago and as i anticipated, it did not disappoint! with over 190 in attendance, it was word for word unmoving-room only turn out. thanks to everyone that came abroad! we had people all the way from california, baltimore, iowa, wisconsin, st. louis, indiana and michigan that came at liberty to join in on the fun! i like meeting new photographers at these good of seminars.dj kicked improbable the round-the-clock talking about the pathway to disrespect. his talk is always inspirational and mundane. i in perpetuity tell people, even if you are not a photographer, to come out because his message can be applied to just about everyone! then jasmine dazzled the audience with her dynamic, engaging and heart-warming talk about the importance of branding and leveraging yourself with your assets. i’m amazed at how she can connect with everyone in the audience. all eyes were glued to her and smiles were seen every where as she told stories and examples from her life. then after a knee-high to a grasshopper break, dj came invest in on to complete the seminar. it’s so great to watch so many nodding heads and smiles of people that are agreeing to the suggestions and advice he was giving. i’m amazed at how dj finds all these great and inspirational quotes. i entertain the idea he has pocketful of them that he just pulls out whenever it’s appropriate. in the finish, it was another triumphant night. i’m so proud of the chicago folks for coming outside! i have in mind we’ve had and will on all occasions have the biggest run out for these events. after the show, a handful of us stayed until past 2am just hanging out and networking with each other. click on the photo to go to my facebook to view all the photos from the night:

on a lighter note, here’s a photo that someone took of my friend sarah barlow. normally i’m not surprised by blurry or off-centered photos taken of me. i thought it was mirthful and kind of surprised that a photo like this was taken at a veteran photographer seminar. (i’m sure it was just a mistake and the other person was a nikon shooter who wasn’t reach-me-down to shooting a canon camera? )

Scientists have discovered ancient bacteria that rely on arsenic, rather than water, to grow during photosynthesis.

Analysis indicates that this process probably dates back a few billion years.

This discovery adds an important new dimension to the arsenic cycle and highlights a previously unsuspected process that may have been essential for establishing the arsenic cycle on the ancient Earth. Results are published in Science.

Scientists sampled two small hot spring-fed ponds on the south-eastern shore of Paoha Island in Mono Lake, CA. The springs were termed “green” and “red” based on the colors of the microbiological films in the pools that were studied. Samples from these springs oxidized the highly toxic Arsenic(III) to the less toxic and less mobile Arsenic(V) by light-dependent photosynthetic reaction that occurred in the absence of oxygen. The scientists also isolated a photosynthetic bacterium that demonstrated As(III)-dependent growth under anoxic conditions.

NASA’s Exobiology Program helped to fund the research along with the USGS. Collaborating colleagues in the diverse, team-oriented aspects of the experimental work were from Duquesne University (Prof. J.F. Stolz; Pittsburgh, PA) University of Georgia (Prof. J.T. Hollibaugh and Dr. J.Fisher); Athens, GA), Southern Illinois University (Prof. M. Madigan, and Dr. M.Asao), the USGS in Menlo Park, CA (Dr. R.S. Oremland, Dr. T.R. Kulp, S.E. Hoeft, and L.G. Miller) and the USGS Water Science Center in Maine (C.W. Culbertson).

Arsenic is a chemical element and is a natural constituent of the Earth’s crust. It occurs naturally in rocks, soil, water, air, plants and animals. When in the natural environment, arsenic usually binds to other molecules, such as those found in soils, and does not tend to travel very far. The average concentration of arsenic in soils in the United States varies considerably. Arsenic can be released into the environment through natural processes such as volcanic activity, erosion of rocks and forest fires. Human actions, such as agricultural practices, mining, smelting and combustion of fossil fuels also contribute to arsenic releases in the environment.

It was an “underway replenishment,” or UNREP, the Navy’s term for connecting two moving ships on the high seas to swap fuel and supplies. Plowing ahead at 15 miles per hour through unpredictable water currents, the two ships can stray dozens of feet in seconds. The goal is to hold them just 180 feet apart for a couple hours, as sailors on the receiving ship fire lines across the water to the supply ship then haul across huge hoses for transferring fuel. Meanwhile, helicopters can hop from deck to deck to bring aboard ammo and supplies. It’s a delicate and dangerous couple’s dance - and one of the keys to U.S. dominance on the high seas.

Amateurs study tactics; professionals study logistics. That’s the old military adage - and nowhere is it more true than at sea. The distances are vast, the requirements for gas and supplies huge and the waves and weather complicate everything. The difference between a true “blue-water” navy with global reach like the U.S. Navy, and a glorified coastal protection force like most navies, is the former’s UNREP capability. It’s because of our logistics ships and our skill in using them that we as a nation can deploy military forces anywhere in the world at short notice.

Logistics underpin Kearsarge’s entire “soft power” deployment to South America. The idea is to haul medical staff, construction workers and their medicine and gear to some of the continent’s remotest, poorest places in order to win hearts and minds and help jumpstart economic development. The UNREP is just the most obvious and dramatic facet. Once we get to Nicaragua in a few days, sailors will start shifting cargo down below in the ship’s holds to get at the needed medical supplies; up on the flight deck, the ship’s detachment of Marine aviators will fire up their workhorse CH-53E choppers to ferry people and stuff; and the landing craft now lashed in Kearsarge’s well deck will motor out on their own supply runs. If Wednesday’s underway replenishment was a couple’s dance, the logistics operation off of Nicaragua will be one big hoedown.

These days all eyes are on the Navy’s ambitious plans to build new stealthy destroyers, shallow-water fighting ships and revamped nuclear aircraft carriers. But behind the scenes there’s an effort underway to boost the sea service’s already world-beating logistical capability. It’s called “seabasing,” and it’s all about designing better ways to move people and supplies from ship to shore. The seabasing plan includes new cargo ships, new floating docks and, most importantly, new planning tools and ways of thinking. Seabasing got one of its first big tests off the West African coast a few months ago, during a humanitarian deployment a lot like Kearsarge’s.

If everything goes according to plan with seabasing, in the future the Navy will be able to pull off far bigger and more complex humanitarian operations than this. In that way, Kearsarge’s current medical mission to South America is just a preview of things to come.

The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services on Wednesday evening is holding the first of 11 scheduled workshops to look at how the city shelters can achieve a “no kill” policy. All meetings are open to the public. (Locations and times are below.)

Every municipal animal shelter wants to arrive at a “no-kill” policy. Essentially, that means that no healthy animals — like the young pooches pictured above in the city’s South L.A. shelter in January — will be euthanized for lack of space. Being able to do that is a challenge.

The Humane L.A. Workshops will look at what is being done and what could be done better. “We want to get input from stakeholders in our community,” says Animal Services general manager Ed Boks, who will attend the Wednesday workshop.

The first meeting is the High Volume/Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Workshop, focusing on that topic and its effect on the goal of no-kill. It is scheduled to be hosted by Councilman Bernard Parks. Also expected, in addition to Boks, are Teri Austin of the Amanda Foundation and Judie Mancuso, the director of California Healthy Pets, the campaign to get the California spay/neuter bill, A.B. 1634, passed.

The location is the Constituent Service Center, 8475 S. Vermont Ave. (near Manchester), Los Angeles. Time: 6:30 p.m.

“At each one, we want to identify the gap between where we are now and where we want to be — and then develop a plan for getting us from here to there,” says Boks. All voices — including those of the critics of L.A.’s shelter system — are welcome, he says.
