Waltham 10, Westford 8: Hawks break through with quality win

Waltham High boys lacrosse coach Steve Duffy has been hoping for a victory like this for about three years now.The Hawks entered Saturday’s non-league clash with previously unbeaten Westford Academy at 2-2. But last week’s pair of 18-1 wipeouts of Medford and Cambridge were hardly the types of triumphs that do much more than build up the statistics and spread around the scoring.Up on Westford’s grass field on Saturday, though, the Hawks used a three-goal burst at the start of the fourth quarter for a 9-6 lead they held for a 10-8 victory that could set the tone for the season after two straight years out of the state tournament.“The best part about it was that it was a hard-fought win against a good team,” Duffy said. “We hadn’t played in a close game like that where we won in a couple of years.“To win a game like we did (Saturday) will really help the psyche of our guys.”The Hawks had to work for this one as they faced a 5-3 deficit at halftime and were tied at 6-6 entering the fourth quarter.That’s when senior Mike Kennan, sophomore Ryan Pratt and senior Mike Merrifield scored in succession with senior Bobby Nadolny providing a nice assist on the Merrifield goal. Westford got back within a goal in the final two minutes before Waltham killed the clock to the final second when senior Tim Doolin provided the final margin.“This was one of our better wins in a couple of years,” Duffy said. “It was like a light bulb went off in their heads that, hey, we’ve got to win this game.”Senior Evan Mula had four goals, and junior D.J. Nurse and Doolin had a goal and assist. Duffy also credited the recent efforts of Kennan: “He’s been playing unbelievably.”Senior Marco Duca earned the victory in net with a strong effort.The Hawks (3-2) have a tough challenge ahead if they want to continue their winning ways as they travel to St. John’s Prep tomorrow before heading to Arlington for an early Greater Boston League showdown Friday night.
