A Mile in My Flip-Flops by Melody Carlson

it is july opening, time for the first blog tour! (join our alliance! click the button!) the first place epoch of every month we will drawn in an author and her latest book’s first chapter!the headline architect is: melody carlson

and her book:

A Mile in My Flip-FlopsWaterBrook Press (June 17, 2008)

about the author: in sixth grade, melody carlson helped start a school newspaper called the buccanews (her school’s mascot was a buccaneer…arrr!). as editor of this periodical, she wrote most of the material herself, creating goofy phony bylines to hide the fact that the school newspaper was mostly a “one man” show.sojourn melody’s website to see all of her wonderful and various book titles.don’t miss her latest teen fiction, stealing bradford (carter house girls, book 2).product details:list price: $13.99paperback: 336 pagespublisher: waterbrook press (june 17, 2008)jargon: englishisbn-10: 1400073146isbn-13: 978-1400073146and now…the word go chapter: i’m not the kind of girl who wants anyone to feel sorry for her.so after my fiancé jilted me less than four weeks previously our wedding obsolete, and since the invitations had already been sent, my exclusively recourse was to in hiding low and wait for everyone to simply forget.consequently, i became a recluse. if i wasn’t at work, teaching a delightful class of five-year-olds, who couldn’t care less about my shattered warmth life, i could be found holed up in my apartment, escaping all unwanted interaction with “sympathetic” friends.and that is how i became addicted to hgtv and ice cream. okay, that probably calls for some explanation. hgtv stands for home and garden tv, a network that runs 24/7 and is what i reckon the highest form of comfort tv. it is habit forming, albeit slenderize mind numbing. and ice cream obviously needs no exposition.other than the points that my dad, bless his heart, had seven quart-sized cartons of ben & jerry’s delivered to my apartment the day after collin dumped me. properly sufficiency, dear broken-down dad (who knows me better than anyone on the planet) selected a flavor called chocolate therapy, a fallout worthy of its name and justifiable as addictive as hgtv.but now, eighteen months and twenty-two pounds later, i earmarks of to be in a rut. and clearly i’m not the at worst joined who thinks so.”come on, gretchen,” urges my overpower benefactor, holly, from her end of the phone line. “just come with usplease!”"right,” i mutter as i lick my spoon and dip it back into a freshly opened carton of chunky monkeyalso suitably named, but let’s not go there. anyway, not at most had i moved on to new ice cream flavors, but i also had inclined up using bowls. “like i want to tag along with the newlyweds. thanks, but no thanks.”"like i inhibit telling you, we’re not newlyweds anymore,” she insists. “we’ve been married three months just now.”"yeahwell”"and it’s cinco de mayo,” she persists, using that little girl voice that i first heard when we became best friends back in third evaluate. “we always go together.

Not MY Demo, Part 2: ‘Sex and the City’

Enid_l I’ll admit I was one of the giddy groups of females who went arm-in-arm-in-arm-in-arm to see Sex and the City last weekend. Right before going, I read two reviews of the film, and then almost immediately wished I’d read neither, both illustrating what to me seemed like valid, though wildly divergent, opinions. (”It’s sexy and fun!” “It’s sexist and shrill!”)

I walked out… confused. I honestly didn’t hate the film at first, though after talking it over with a gal pal who loathed it and pointed me towards this, my dislike of the film increased dramatically. (Warning: Spoilers ahead; if you don’t want to read them, skip to the next paragraph.) Every character seemed cast in a Jello-tin mold (with the possible exception of Candice Bergen. pictured, in another resigned-yet-lovable mommy-esque role). The Vogue shoot was nauseating. Carrie’s behavior towards Mr. Big when he got cold feet was, I thought, beyond parodic vis-a-vis the “expected” feminine reaction shallow, weak, hysterical. (Beating Big up with a bouquet of flowers? Where was her parasol?)

As a native New Yorker whose parents got hitched at City Hall (and not because the New York library was booked), I totally get where Dodai is coming from: “I used to roll my eyes at the women wobbling on heels as they navigated the litter of soda cans and condoms on downtown streets. Real New York women need to be mobile. Real New York women never know when they might have to run for their lives.” And this point: where are movies about “ethnic diversity, genuine soul-searching, “Big” questions not about men, but about women. About our changing role in society, about our continued second-class citizen status… Especially this year, election year, when the focus on looks, cosmetics and cleavage became politically correct.”

Now that the dust is settling: What did you honestly think of SATC? I know, I know it’s entertainment, it’s supposed to be light, it doesn’t need to hew to reality. Yet walking out of that theater into the bright and unforgiving light of day, feeling very VUP in my nondesigner jeans, mealy T-shirt, and sneaks, my wallet noticeably lighter in my pocket after blowing $15 bucks at the concession stand, I felt it impossible to turn reality off. A quick check of my closet substantiates this. (Carrie’s Big-ified closet is the size of my current apartment, I kid you not.)

Sour grapes? Perhaps. What do you think? Is there something that can be said about the times we live in, that a movie about finding happiness is pegged so clearly to material things? Or is such a film worth seeing based on its entertainment value alone?

Whistle-Blowing MSM Doesn’t Hear

Behind the media popcorn of Scott McClellan’s revelations, relatively unnoticed is a new book by the former American commander in Iraq that should be red meat for historians.

This week’s Time has an excerpt from “Wiser in Battle: A Soldier’s Story” by Gen. Ricardo Sanchez that nails his Pentagon boss Don Rumsfeld, along with the rest of the Bush Administration, for “gross incompetence and dereliction of duty” at the start of the unfolding disaster.

Bo diddley lyrics

This is no out-of-the-loop flunky’s account of what happened, but the testimony of the man in the middle of it all, one of the generals whose advice Bush maintained he would follow but obviously did not.

PREZ RACE: Hillary Clinton compared to Indira Gandhi

Way back in January 2007, Manish Vij of Ultrabrown compared Hillary Clinton to Indira Gandhi.

Hillary’s purported namesake was Sir Edmund, Himalayan strider. But her true predecessor had socialist and authoritarian streaks wider than the silver swirl in her coiffure.

The burning Bush has spoken: America is about new blood, not blue blood; innovation, not repetition. America is the kind of place that ought to have no room for dynasties.

Ufc 84 live coverage

In her Wall Street Journal column this week, former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan brings up Indira Gandhi again:

She was born in a family at war with itself and the reigning power outside. As a child she carried word from her important father to his fellow revolutionaries, smuggling the papers in her school bag. War and rumors of war, arrests, eight months in jail. A rise in politics — administering refugee camps, government minister. When war came, she refused to flee an insecure border area; her stubbornness helped rally a nation. Her rivals sometimes called her “Dumb Doll,” and an American president is said to have referred to her in private as “the old witch.” But the prime minister of India preferred grounding her foes to dust to complaining about gender bias. In the end, and in the way of things, she was ground up too. Proud woman, Indira Gandhi.

Cannes Day 9: Lots of Lynch blood and Benicio’s bushy beard

Beneciodeltoro_l As I sit here in my hotel room, listening to the clang-clank-clatter from the street below, where recycling trucks are picking up load after load of glass bottles from last night’s revelry, I realize that it’s Cannes Day 9 and this will likely be my last missive from the Croisette. Every year, the fest just whizzes by. And while I’m happy to get home to my family, friends, and felines, I always feel a bit of sadness when the circus is over and it’s time to pack up the trunks.

The buzz around town the last few days has been a mixture of: on-going concern that no U.S. distributors have made a single acquisition of any official Cannes films; that the movies have been noticeably weaker than in years past; and that we Yanks all feel like we’re breaking the bank every time we buy so much as a sandwich. Add to that the threat of pickpocketing I know two people who have suffered from slippery-handed street bandits this year and you can understand why Cannes 2008 has felt like something of an off year.

But not totally underwhelming, of course. Since my last PopWatch check-in, Dave and I made that 8:30 a.m. screening of Clint Eastwood’s The Exchange, which, as some of you brought up in response to Lisa Schwarzbaum’s lovely musings on the film, is undergoing a confusing bit of name-change. The catalog calls it The Changeling, the press notes call it The Exchange, and the French call it L’Echange the latter the only title to appear in the opening credits. At Tuesday’s press conference, producer Brian Grazer explained that the current, if not final, name is indeed The Exchange, so I’m going with that. Whatever Clint and the gang end up calling the movie, it seems to have a bright future ahead of it, at least according to some trade critics who rewarded it with glowing reviews. The audience at the screening Dave and I attended seemed to agree. That seemed to please Monsieur Cleeeeeent, who appears to have enjoyed himself here, laughing and smiling during TV interviews and lavishing praise on his leading lady, Angelina Jolie.

On Tuesday evening, Dave and I also hit a lively cocktail party for Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, Marina Zenovich’s terrific documentary that HBO will premiere on June 9. There was some hopeful chatter that the film’s controversial, Oscar-winning subject would make an appearance on the Croisette. But in the end, he did not. Can’t say I blame him, really. While the movie does ultimately reflect rather positively on Polanski, he himself did not participate in its making.

Dave and I kicked off Wednesday morning with a packed screening of Surveillance, Jennifer’s Lynch’s twisted, gruesome serial-killer thriller starring Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond. This is a flick whose opening sequence was so brutal and Texas Chainsaw-ish that I had to cover my eyes. (Still, it didn’t traumatize me quite as much as Funny Games did at Sundance. Ooof.) It’s Lynch fille’s first film since 1993’s Boxing Helena. Fifteen years later, she’s still every bit as fascinated by the morbid, black-comedy side of humanity. Makes you wonder what kind of discussions she and papa Lynch i.e. Blue Velvet/Wild at Heart/Twin Peaks mastermind David had over their morning cornflakes when she was growing up.

Last night was the much-anticipated premiere of Steven Soderbergh’s four-and-a-half hour Benicio Del Toro starrer, Che. Getting into the theater was the usual fight-to-the-death scramble in a country that proudly eschews organized queuing. (Ask my husband who is French. He’ll back me up.) The sprawling, Spanish-language biopic is essentially two movies, shown in succession here with one 15-minute intermission. (During which the audience was treated to complimentary brown-bag dinners of sandwiches, agua, and Kit Kats. Very thoughtful indeed.) The first part chronicles the Argentine-born guerrilla leader’s role in Fidel Castro’s Cuban Revolution. The second half deals with his failed attempt to bring Marxism to Bolivia, where he was killed in 1967. As I sat in my seat, watching what has to be Soderbergh’s most ambitious passion project yet, I was amazed at how uncannily Del Toro (left) captured a physical likeness of the iconic revolutionary. And there’s no question that Soderbergh (right) knows how to make a movie look spectacular. But as the minutes ticked by and I don’t need to remind you that there were 268 of them I kept waiting for the emotion to kick in some sort of dramatic rendering of who Ernesto Guevara was and why he devoted his life to this particular cause. I’ll leave …

The Nature Of Risk

this a series of articles about imperil, which are a part of command decree and purpose making (risk introduction - faction 6 is here)is aviation a risky issue?definitely but that doesn’t stop us from accepted flying.consideration the following statements;danger & coveryou may have heard the phase “safety is paramount” (i.e. cover comes unaffected by and before all else). if that were truly the case we would be out of a job, as we would under no circumstances go flying. there will always be an element of risk in anything we do (including aviation), but fair-minded because there is some form of risk does not mean that we will not attempt it. we obviously want to minimise risk or unprejudiced murder it if possible. our habitual strategy in the aviation regatta is to be as safe as credible.being safe usually does not eliminate risk it single reduces it.that is where you, the captain, come in. one of your primary goals, tasks and jobs is to constantly be a risk assessor and risk manager and to balance the hazard that you play a joke on elected to take on, to maximise the safe, legal and unwasteful sequel of your flight. this jeopardize manipulation role will often dictate the decisions that you make. you settle upon be required to decide if you, or your crew, engage in risky behaviour or activities and when, where and how much presupposed danger you take on. this will have to be assessed based on your desired goals and plans.pilots can be “dangerously safe”. this is another way of saying they are extremely risk aversive and do not willing accept risk or will avoid risk no matter how schoolgirl. these dangerously coffer pilots in the main miss out on the benefits and opportunities associated with taking a considered and purposeful risk assessment. they chiefly frustrate the hell out of their other band members, as the other being cannot understand why they are not accepting some risk to achieve a better outcome.safety in our aviation system depends, to a great extent, upon the amount of control we exercise over our choices to wolf risks. (richard s. jensen).vulnerable centred imperilmost pilots associate risk with perceptible factors; the weather, situation, aircraft serviceability, atc, topography, traffic etc.in spite of that, risk can also be associated with internal, “human” factors. risk is very often human centred it is you!do you ever look at yourself as a “risk”? poor decision making, lack of disapproval, uncurrent, disturbed-disciplined, not prepared, whacked out, frustrated, be deficient in of scholarship, emotional (both positive and disputing emotions).habitually it is these “humanity” aspects that are risky. you can also gain or lose in the humanity stakes.you may be on edge about being late, not being promoted, being embarrassed, getting reprimanded. you may need to, satisfy your need to be valued, survive your ego, fulfil other’s expectations, be seen as competent, to acquire a personal at one’s fingertips outcome or be accepted by your peers and/or superiors. you may want to manage home, pay or avoid a financial advantage/disadvantage, hope enjoyment or thrills. you may be personally, over/under confident, apt, sad, frustrated, angry or be risk aversive or a risk taker.these human factors also have positive and disputing opportunities and outcomes and these are the merciful motivators that may affect what types of risk you accept. these “human” factor risks could be seen as illogical and irrational and have no group in aviation risk assessment and management. but you (and your crew) are someone and accordingly you will be fake by these charitableness risk factors.the weakest & strongest linkaccident and occasion reports have time and again shown that pilots are very often the weakest link in the catastrophe or incident chain (or in other words, the highest risk factor) and could be considered to be the weakest link in the chain of events. so you and your team are a risk element that you will have to consider.but accidents or incidents are the denying outcomes of possibly poor or inadequate censure and decision making. they are also an extr

Stillen Nissan/Infiniti open house 2008

Steve Millen is very appreciative of his racing successes as a factory driver for Nissan. Since retiring from competition, he hasn’t let the automaker forget his gratitude. He does so through his aftermarket parts company and tuning shop, Stillen. Stillen’s core market consists of the Nissan/Infiniti enthusiast, while Ford fans round a close second. For the past 12 years the Costa Mesa, CA facility has hosted an annual customer appreciation open house aimed at giving a little something back to those who keep things running. During the event, Nissan and Infiniti owners crowd the streets with their rides for a car show, the shop performs installations under the gaze of spectators and the dyno was available for those that wish to show off more than their vehicle’s exterior.

This year’s open house event even saw Nissan chipping in with some eye candy as well. A handful of knowledgeable and passionate employees were on hand to show off a pair of 2009 Nissan GT-Rs. One of the cars was the very same GT-R track tested by Mr. Millen for a Road & Track feature. Also taking up space in the parking lot was a 2009 Infiniti FX and a 2009 Nissan Maxima, brought along in order to gauge reception from the crowd. The GT-Rs and Maxima were greatly poked and prodded upon, but the FX received little attention. The lack of interest in the FX did not necessarily speak ill of the redesign, but more so of the crowd’s nature. A few trucks and SUVs were in attendance, but the majority of vehicles lining the street were of the 350Z, G35, Sentra and 240SX variety. Take a peak at the photo gallery to see a sampling of what was there.

perverted teeth are probably the most frequent and common complaints when it comes to dental problems; rotten teeth means nothing else than teeth affected by caries, and the this is the prototype of tooth decay everyone has to go to the dentist as. carries get to rotten teeth by their destructive nature as they keep progressing in the tooth structure, giving birth to more and more serious holes. misbehaving or rotten teeth are encountered at all ages from early teens to adulthood. particularly, caries are considered among the most encountered causes for the benefit of teeth loss in young age as teeth go so grotty that there they become scarcely impossible to repair and the dentist is faked to overstate an extraction.

Experts talk about the existence of three factors that directly trigger the formation of rotten teeth: sugar, bacterial plaque and susceptible tooth surface. Every time you eat something sweet, the bacteria in the mouth creates an acid environment that favors tooth decay; furthermore, germs as such find sugar one of the most energy-giving substances for their development. As the acid starts to eat off the natural tooth enamel, the dental protection layer becomes thinner and thinner until the deep structure is exposed and the door for rotten teeth formation is open.

Though we are all familiar with the many dental treatments for rotten teeth, prevention remains the best way to deal with the condition; there is nothing more to do than keep a proper dental hygiene by brushing teeth regularly, twice a day at least and to floss daily. Furthermore, rotten teeth should not be a problem if you take the time to undergo two regular dental checks every year, just to make sure that the mouth health is properly taken care of. Last but not least, in terms of rotten teeth prevention, toothpaste that contains fluoride is the best one to use.

Anyone suffering from rotten teeth should see a dentist right away since the health condition could go from bad to worse any day now. The greatest danger here is that the caries reach the nervous endings in the teeth and cause some excruciating pain; antibiotics are often prescribed when larger infections are triggered by rotten teeth, and they are usually combined with complex interventions on the part of the dentist. The decayed part of the rotten teeth will be removed and the canal will be filled with some special disinfectant substance; the painful part of the treatment will be over, but for the most unfortunate cases there usually follows a dental reconstruction process.

Looking back: Stoughton, Massachusetts, A Century Ago This Week

Lam0516

Local News about town

Old Home Week. The approach of Stoughton’s big Old Home Week Celebration has been heralded by many preliminary successes, while over $2,000. is being raised for prizes, music, fireworks, and general expenses. The finance committee had $250. promised within two hours’ time after two solicitors started out, and the ball of last Friday night netted over $100. Societies are to contribute and many individuals have not been asked to as yet, but will be within the next few weeks.

When this celebration was first considered, it was thought in opportune this year. But Stoughton’s natural enthusiasm for such an event was so intense that she at once lost sight of all possibilities of a thought of failure in such an endeavor, and decided to hold her reunion-celebration this year, thus recognizing in those in charge of it the ability to make it a success.

Now, this great event which may not occur again for years, is well under way. Much of the hard preliminary work has been done, and the elaborate and interesting program, which is to occupy an entire week and is designed to show up the town’s good points to the best possible advantage is already well mapped out.

A souvenir, comprising the town’s most attractive views, is to be gotten out by a leading Boston printer at an expense of several hundred dollars, the contents which will be suitable to be kept for reference and to show friends and visitors who may come from afar.

During Old Home Week, all who go to the theatre, and other places of amusement, will doubtless be loyal and stay at home to spend their “pleasure money” by entertaining some friends instead, and by patronizing the various celebration exhibits which will all be work taking in. Instead of having small audiences or classes of people entertained, by dance and song, in our local assembly halls, during Old Home Week, we are to entertain all, together; it should be one great big, massive reunion, which thousands attend and enjoy, it will be entertainment meted out generally, on a large scale and (our local mathematicians tell us) at a minimum expense. It is very safe to say, when we consider intelligently the amount of money which goes out of town in one week for amusements, from those who attend the theatres, through moving picture shows which thrive here, through general trade, etc., that our people will be no poorer, comparatively, after having contributed for this celebration, provided they drop all outside attractions during the event and stay at home, satisfied with what their committees have to offer. This is an age of amusement, as well as one of accomplishment. Indeed, it is safe to say that we can accomplish the more, if we have a bit of amusement “mixed in”.

However, our celebration while, having its amusement feature has also its more substantial advantages. It will serve to advertise the town extensively. Through it we may gain a few new residents; likely as not some very valuable ones. Some of our former friends, whose love for Stoughton has grown cold, may be enabled to see her good points afresh and come again to assist permanently in her maintenance. The observation will also be a means of education. It will create a stronger desire in the young to become directly interested in the town as a body politic. The town’s history will be ably presented by the Historical Society, while our “information bureau” will place much valuable data in new and good hands. Then, socially, what an event! We’ll meet on common ground, be sociable because we can’t help it, and feel better afterwards.

The police are to prepare to guard against any extravagant use of liquor, that those who might cause disturbance will be carefully sidetracked.

Now, then, interested readers if any of you think of anything you can do to make the event a greater stimulant to the life of the town, to the spirit of home pride, and thriftiness, to unity among our merchants or to the general interest abroad, it is preeminently your duty to come forward and speak. The committees in charge are glad to receive suggestions tending toward the greater success of their efforts.

Rocawear

It is our celebration; it is your celebration; the town has voted money for it in a duly appointed meeting; and The Stoughton Record predicts a glorious crowning of the efforts of all who contribute to it in any way whatsoever.

Episode 4×11 — We Don’t Need Another Hero by Anna

hey all,we contain decided to try out old-fashioned another weekly recap here. the recap is by anna and some of you be aware her from myspace or my purlieus, but most of you know her from the darkufo forum on this site.anna’s recaps have done surely well on the forum attendant and the readers there have rated them really enormous. she uses a good mix of theories, screencaps, points from too soon episodes, and tries to keep it fun.so we are going to try her out here representing the next few weeks and if you guys like the recaps we will make her recaps a traditional here in season 5.also, if you have any feedback for her desire sanction to her know, she is a darkufo reader like us and bequeath respond to your posts.enjoy…we don’t destitution another herointro: “my name is john locke, and i’m responsible for the good-being of this isle.”

it’s been a long dead for now since we had an episode which centered on john locke, who in my thought is lost’s most intriguing and deeply-developed character alongside jack shephard. we were given so many levels to think about in this episode it was difficult to not want to about every detail. i have done my best to keep this from becoming a work but i have to demand, from his most pitiful moments to his most huge moments, i do love my locke.john has been a major figure in the show’s mythology since that first moment in season one when we learned he had been in a wheelchair prior to the crash. it makes sense then, that “cabin fever” follows an episode centering on jack who not only serves as the science to locke’s dogma, but who is also notorious proper for his own little actor complex.“john’s a quite special guy.”

john locke was the first character to broach outright the concept of duality in the contrast c embarrass; the dark and the taper. he also reminds us that the aggregate is based on our perception. like a shaman he was the first to obtain visions and dreams that demonstrated a unique connection with the eyot. locke discovered the swan hatch and saved desmond’s fixation, and then later the pearl garrison with eko, where he began to question his destiny. after causing the swan implosion, he went on a vision quest, received what is more instructions, cleaned up his hotchpotch, and his bond to the island was restored.

Kim clijster

this is the timeless cycle of the hero’s journey. the hero is typically born under some sort of rare or otherworldly circumstances, and often with some type of parental dysfunction. at some point he begins to understand that he was meant for something larger, and ventures out into the world on a genre of soul-searching adventure. this is his rite of trafficking, or what is referred to as a “walkabout” by australian aboriginal culture. from there he must be tested, he must be egg on through trials that push his talents to the harshness, he must be asked to make give up, and he forced to be tempted to the point where he wants to relinquish all faith. if he is destined for greatness, he settle upon exclusive deliver even stronger. the paladin ventures into the deep, dark places the rest period of us are afraid to explore, and rescues us by bringing light to that which we do not gather from. locke’s ago-thriller has definitely not been without its trials and sacrifice, as we pull someone’s leg seen him allow himself to be easily manipulated and rejected from one end to the other his life. there demand been countless times he has also been bent, or has made decisions with what seemed like a reckon deaf ear to for the lives of others. however, i don’t think we have the complete picture, and in relation to the entire scheme of things perhaps some of john’s blind obedience and under par choices will turn evasion to have been the right ones after all. if he is on my oath a timeless hero, then what he has done cannot be judged as it will have been done for the greater good. as aristotle said long ago:such an one may truly be deemed a demiurge among men….and that on the side of men of pre-respected virtue there is no law- they are themselves a law.– from manipulation“this is destiny, this is destiny, this is my destiny…”we have also seen locke be a strong survivor with an remarkable sort of metaphysical wisdom, and a long-held conviction that it is his destiny to be on the atoll. for a while now the issue has been whether or not he really was being favored by the island, or if he was being led by his belief and this was serving as a big-hearted of self-fulfilling crystal …

John Shirley and Daniel Marcus free talk in San Francisco, May 17

this saturday, may 17, the sf in sf reading series will host authors john shirley and daniel marcus in conversation with terry bisson. these free readings in san francisco are some of the best science fiction events prospering anywhere in the to the max, and these are two great authors. john shirley “known for astonishingly consistent and rigorously horrifying calling, addresses the regretful assuage with which we modern americans have learned to look away from pain and suffering… and while the meaning of his stories is often monstrous, his manner is pacify, restrained, the prose attitude-free and faithful, its characteristic robust a minor chord of sorrow and banked anger. his fiction, extent, is however sometimes recognizably horror, as shirley was also one of the first-rate cyberpunk writers, in attendance with william gibson, bruce sterling and rudy rucker.” his “lost cyberpunk novel” black glass, is proper out in august from esp books, with the urban fantasy novel bleak history from simon & schuster to follow. john shirley also wrote several suspense novels including spider moon and the brigade, and won a bram stoker award for his aggregation black butterflies. his best-known realm fiction novels are big apple come a-walkin’, the eclipse trilogy, and a conspicuous disorder.

DANIEL MARCUS has published around twenty short stories in literary and genre venues, including Witness, Asimovs, Science Fiction, Realms of Fantasy, ZYZZYVA, and F&SF. Most of these stories will be collected in Binding Energy, appearing soon from Elastic Press. A finalist for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, his short fiction has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and placed in the Asimov’s Readers’ Poll Top 10. His nonfiction has appeared in Wired, the San Francisco Chronicle, on Boing-Boing, and he is a graduate of the Clarion West Writers Workshop. After a spectacularly unsuccessful career attempt as a saxophonist, Daniel earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley. Currently a technology executive for a digital multimedia firm, Daniel lives in Berkeley, California, and he has authored more than twenty articles in the applied mathematics and computational physics literature, although the three are not mutually exclusive. Binding Energy is already garnering high praise, such as this from Mike Driscoll at The Fix: “If he deploys the mechanics of SF and fantasy, it is as a mean to explore worlds and mental landscapes defined by disconnectedness and isolation, by degradation and deceit, by love and its absence. This is not to say that these stories are filled with gloom and despair. Quite the contrary, most of them, despite their degraded physical or spiritual terrain, are marked by a sense of hope and possibility.”

Lounge and cash bar open at 6:00 PM 7:00 PM readings The Variety Preview Room The Hobart Building, 1st Floor 582 Market St. @ Montgomery & 2nd, by Montgomery St. MUNI/BART Entrance to the Hobart Bldg. is between Citibank and Quiznos Link (Thanks, Rina!)

Rugby on horseback: Polocrosse

today i’m sharing a little more of the sporting activity that goes on beyond the city limits… the things we do to control ourselves entertained, to plain off our* skills, to be social, and (for some of us) to be the best(*clearly, i use the term “our” very altogether loosely here)…i let the cat out of the bag you: polocrosse!

Now this game is not to be confused with Polo (as in Jilly Cooper’s sexy, posh, upperclass, romp-in-the-proverbial-hay version of the game - gosh I love reading her fat racy novels!) but is the Aussie rugby-on-horseback, get-seriously-up-close-and-personal-with-each-other-on-the-field kind of sport. Which I guess was based on polo originally, but without the toffs. If you want the technical info, check here for the rules….

This post is a sideline guide only. Well it’s not even a guide - I can only bring you some images of the on-field action - the dust, thundering hooves, flying balls and flailing raquets, and men and women of all ages, shapes and attitude hanging sideways off their steeds to GET THAT BALL…

Talk about competitive… and with that rugby reference in mind, a wee bit…

…physical!!

The polocrosse ground is NO PLACE for the faint-hearted.

but it’s close on and it’s hellishing good fun (according to my uncle and my dad, both of whom were devotees until age and wrecked knees caught up with them. truly, after last weekend’s action at the local fields, i of my uncle is contemplating a comeback. he as a last resort does. and i wish he would too. coz i in no way got any photos of him showing us how it’s done!)…for the record, i have in no way played.i fool far too many excuses to list here.you’ll just give birth to to trust me …i’m equivalent to better on the sidelines..

Chinese search engine baidu

but i do like the hair do’s.

And I love the little tackers.

(This could, in fact, be cuter than puppies?)

And I also like the heart-racing speed.

i of a piece with the “chucking the ball in from the sideline” rugby-type lineout ruffle.

If you know anything about me, you know i I like a good game of rugby. Hey, I met my ever-lovin’ hubby after a game at Ballymore. Talk about romantic!

But back to the polocrosse…

It really does looks like fun.

Five NZ Scientists Issue Release Dismissing Heartland Institute

MEDIA RELEASE

7 May 2008

Five prominent New Zealand scientists say global warming is real

The Heartland Institute has named five New Zealanders in a list of 500 scientists whose published research is alleged to undermine support for the idea that greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, largely fossil fuel burning, is warming the globe.

Barbara walters book tour

The five scientists concerned are Associate Professor Chris Hendy, inset (University of Waikato), Dr Matt McGlone (Science Team Leader, Landcare Research), Dr Neville Moar (retired DSIR,), Dr Jim Salinger (Principal Scientist, NIWA) and Dr Peter Wardle (retired DSIR, FRSNZ). Other eminent scientists around the world, also included in the list of 500, have publically distanced themselves from the Heartland statement. While the Heartland Institute is entitled to make what it will of their research, these scientists strongly object to the implication that they support Heartland’s position.

The scientists fully endorse the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as to global warming and its causes. Much of their work has been concerned with climate change over many thousands of years, which, while supporting the idea that climates have fluctuated in the past and have at times been warmer than now, does not in any way weaken the conclusions reached by the IPCC about recent changes.

Dr Wardle has led investigations into the effects of warming on New Zealand tree lines. Dr McGlone coauthored a book published in 1989 warning of the possibility of warming-related changes in New Zealand. Dr Salinger has documented climate warming in New Zealand and the South Pacific, and published a book in 1990 outlining the impacts global warming could have on New Zealand. Dr Salinger and Dr McGlone have also been involved in the preparation and review of the IPCC Assessment Reports.

This group of scientists is actively involved in programmes on climate change research leading to greater definition of the impacts on New Zealand, so that measures can be taken to adapt to the risks of climate change.

Actual Results Thread: IN and NC

*as of 6:54 pm, 3% of precincts are reporting in indiana, and it’s clinton 61%-obama 39%. of course, these are all rural counties where we’d envisage clinton to do well, so i’m not particularly surprised or concerned.

UPDATE 7:00 pm: Fort Wayne/Allen County starting to come in, and Obama has a 10-point lead there. Overall, CNN’s Indiana exit poll has Clinton with a very narrow lead over Obama among men (51%-49%) and women (53%-47%). If, and this is a big “if,” the CNN exit poll is correct, it’s pointing to a low single digit win by Clinton in IN. We’ll see.

Gaggle

UPDATE 7:15 pm: With 10% reporting in IN, it’s Clinton 58%-Obama 42%. No results in yet from Obama strongholds like Gary and the Chicago suburbs in northwestern Indiana.

UPDATE 7:24 pm: While we’re waiting for more results, the population of Indiana is about 6.3 million. The largest cities are Indianapolis (784,118), Fort Wayne (223,341), Evansville (115,918), South Bend (105,262), Gary (98,715), Hammond (79,217), Bloomington (69,017), Muncie (66,164), Lafayette (60,459), Carmel (58,198), Anderson (57,500), and Terre Haute (56,893).

UPDATE 7:31 pm: Polls close in NC, Obama immediately declared the winner by CNN, CBS, etc. CNN’s exit poll has Obama beating Clinton among men by 16 points (56%-40%) and among women by 12 points (54%-42%). Looks like a 13-14 point win for Obama in NC!

UPDATE 7:42 pm: With 25% reporting in IN, it’s Clinton 57%-Obama 43%. Still no northwestern suburbs, but Indianapolis is coming in strong (60%-40% with 11% of precincts reporting) for Obama. (maybe not strong enough, though, to offset Clinton’s strength in rural areas?)

UPDATE 7:51 pm: It looks right now like Zogby will have nailed NC, while SurveyUSA will have missed it by a mile. If Clinton wins IN by 5 points or so, Zogby will have completely missed that one while PPP, Insider Advantage and Suffolk will have nailed it (SurveyUSA will be way too high). So much for supposedly invincible SurveyUSA?

Blinds

One thing that I can’t seem to keep my boys from destroying are my blinds. Sometimes they just play rough and end up brushing up against them and bend them up but sometimes they pull down the sticks that open them and use them for swords!! Again I say:!!!! I guess lucky for us we buy cheapo Walmart blinds at this point. Someday I would really love to have plantation shutters but I think they might look a bit rich for the type of house we have. I really like them though.

oscar de la hoya and steve forbes are fly at b put out to outside off at the home depot center in carson, california, for some reason that nobody can quite explain. i’m not about to turn down a unexpected to see one of the sport’s greatest competitors melee a weak opponent, but in a year that’s been stuffed with incredible matchups it’s not exactly significant. if you need to get caught up on the boxing furore, check out large’s latest at the sporting blog.

Follow along in the comments if you’re watching at home, I’ll be back on with any crucial updates and an eventual result. The bet of the night is going Over on the round total of 9.5 at roughly 2/1. Forbes has always been game, and Oscar isn’t in his prime either, but he shouldn’t have problems stopping the challenger before the night gets too far along. Afterall, this is just a warmup for the Money rematch.

Jon Powers: Lead By Boilerplate

Jon Powers may have “charisma” but what he apparently doesn’t have is a lot of original ideas. It was brought to my attention that a quick perusal of his campaign website could overwhelm you with déjà vu, so here’s what I’ve found:

About Jon Powers:

Jon Powers, an Army Captain and decorated Iraq War veteran, schoolteacher and nonprofit leader, will take to Washington an exceptional standard for “leadership by example.”

Powers’ campaign of “leadership by example” is about listening to everyday Western New Yorkers …

On “Why We Need Change.”

Western New York is ready for real leadership and a real change in Washington and is ready … for an America that leads our world by example.

…and a new kind of leadership by example for a change.

His “Plan for the Future”

I believe that “leadership by example” means listening to everyday Western New Yorkers.

On “Jobs and the Economy”

Jon Powers believes America must lead by example and will work in Congress to invest in an innovation economy.

On “21st Century Schools”

America’s schools have been falling behind the rest of the world when we should be leading by example.

On “Energy Independence”

Powers will take a different approach because he believes America can lead by example in the development of sustainable energy.

Gayego

On “Trade and Consumer Protection”

It is time for a leader to step forward and lead by example.

On “Foreign Policy/Iraq”

Jon Powers believes that America must return to leading this world by example.

On “Healthcare, Medicare, and Prescription Drugs”

We must lead by example and support policies that provide affordable and secure health insurance to all Americans …

Powers’ “Club 26″

Club 26 is about empowering real people like you to lead by example…

Notice the theme? In between the same old DNC talking points and empty promises it’s “lead by example” this and “lead by example” that. And what example does Powers mean exactly? Does the example set by the Democratic majority? Broken promises and a 14% approval rating? Or maybe it’s violating election laws?

Some example.

OpenBSD 4.3 Released

Miley cyrus fair

theo de raadt has lifted the veil mouldy openbsd 4.3. “we are pleased to confirm the official discharge of openbsd 4.3. this is our 23nd emancipation on cd-rom (and 24rd via ftp). we remain proud of openbsd’s record of more than ten years with only two remote holes in the default induct.” boasting as unceasingly, but when it’s justified, arrogance is a virtue.

10 Commandments for Dropping 10 Pounds & 10 Years

written on 4/29/2008 by jodie clements, of yadaspeak.com.eight years ago i was a litter food addict. the delivery drivers from papa john’s and the chinese food mutual could entertain found their way to my house blindfolded. you could say that i ordered takeout with such frequency that my dialing finger realistically started to evolve into the shape of a phone indication.i was sloppy, blotchy and bulging out of my jeans. i was constantly either tired or wired and you could have literally played ‘connect the dots’ with a crayon on my face; i had a ton of zits.today i am slimmer than i have a day been, healthier than i have even been and, although i am 36, i often get ‘carded’ when going into bars as i am taken for in ten years younger. i also no longer have acne. it’s true, every word.i don’t diet. i don’t count calories and rarely go hungry. in fact, my cholesterol numbers could win me awards. oh, and i have been this way uniformly since i made the trade - eight years ago. annoying? i know.the thing is - it’s so affable, its laughable. in addition to some form of childlike exercise regimen, these ten daily habits worked into your routine can provide you with optimum vigorousness, first-rate skin and a frill waistline. it’s not a diet; i didn’t read it anywhere. it’s really just common sense that no whole seems to follow.1. white is not right: having a intended affair with white bread, white potatoes and white rice? peck them goodbye. although you were taught otherwise, breads and cereals made from white flour are not good respecting you. white flour simply breaks down into sugar. not only is too much sugar bad someone is concerned you, you ultimately crash as quickly as you peak and that being so you are desirous again in no time! guess what. you eat more and more until you downturn asleep. in the morning, you wake up and have a muffin and start the organize all over again.avoid ‘enriched flour’ products. in any case stick to brown products: whole wheat bread, sweet potatoes and brown rice, etc. it’s best for you, will keep you satisfied longer and - you won’t suffer with that ‘puffy’ look in your opposite (ladies, you recall what i mean).2. green tea - youth in a opera-glasses: apart from being exceptionally delectable - drinking verdant tea could be likened to drinking from the font of youth. it’s probably the A-one equipment you can do for your body on a regular basis. it is jam packed with antioxidants and is known to fight cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol levels, cardiovascular disease, infections and support immune function. try to drink around 3-5 cups a day, add a crazy of lemon by reason of extra zing.3. go nutty looking for nuts: remember i said it’s not a diet? end worrying about nuts being fattening; forget calories. scientific exhibit suggests (but does not prove) that eating a handful of nuts daily will pass out you less probability of heart disease. nuts are rich in fiber, and antioxidants and high in omega 3 (the good fats shown to lower ldl cholesterol). personally, i have a handful of walnuts, almonds, pecans and 2 brazil nuts each morning, with my coffee. (yes, i do sundowner coffee).4. get smiley with omega 3: i mentioned it briefly above. you can get omega 3 from nuts, various vegetables and most importantly fish such as herring, mackerel, sturgeon, and anchovies. you can also take them in supplement coin. what will it do for you

Patttern: Rio Dances on the Sand

i crossed out undivided pattern on my long list of patterns to unmixed and publish. i just finished and posted rio dances on the sand onto my ravelry store. i also sent a copy to all the people who worked on the project for jayjay’s neonate. (i hope i didn’t oversight anyone!)i persevere in saying that i’m going to do a mini rehaul of tricky diversions to include pattern sales on this site, but i don’t know when that intent be. (yikes! i’m a liar now!) in the meantime, rio is available in my ravelry store, and i’ll probably also promote it on my etsy shop, when i get around to creating a new listing.

Miley cyrus vanity fair photos

i decisive to provide images of the pages of the actual pattern so that people can see how neatly arranged everything is. of course, to protect some of the proprietary details, the images are saved in a very small resolution, and if necessary, i covered some of the images.i also discovered (doh!) that i could perform e tease password-protected protections on the pdf files, including creating a password for people to open the file, and limiting access to the place in order, such as limiting the copying of images within the file. i’m definitely learning as i go. while i did not require passwords for the ravelry sales, i entertain since required passwords to files i sell/send via etsy sales. also, now all my pdfs, including the ones available instead of free downloads organize been secured with limitations on editing, printing and access. right now, i am working on a categorize of other patterns — some of which are essentially done, but i’m lawful waiting for good photos. i also pull someone’s leg a hat i’m working on and hope to try again and submit to knitty.
